TØNDRA was formed in 2019, when the musicians behind the masks met through a project for a Sámi music festival in Finnmark, Norway. It was quickly established that both of them were over average interested in synthesizers and electronic music, so they began to talk about making music together. They met for a jam session with their synths, pedals and racks and hit it off right away.

They also quickly established their needs to hide their personal selves from the audience, as they want the audience to be 100% focused on the music and what the music is to them as listeners. For TØNDRA, the personal aspect was always to be taken out of the equation.

TØNDRA also wants to mainly put the spotlight on artists from the north or with ties to the north. Which is why they reached out to the renowned Sámi artist Máret Ánne Sara, who made the masks they wear on stage. In addition they asked the Sámi designer Sieva to design their stage outfits. They are also working with videographer Ándaras Daugstad Leonardsen and Anna Jarosz for visuals, music videos and graphics.
